Ben H. Powell, Jr. was a Houston-based attorney, businessman and investor. Born in Huntsville, Texas, Mr. Powell spent much of his youth in Austin before studying at the Virginia Military Institute where he graduated with honors. He received his JD in Law from the University of Texas at Austin and a Masters in Law from Harvard.
Kitty King Corbett Powell was born and raised in Bay City, Texas. She attended Sweet Briar College for two years and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Bacteriology. She married Ben in 1939 and they became the parents of four children and later grandparents of ten grandchildren. Twelve great grandchildren continue their legacy in the fourth generation.
After living in Austin, Texas for nearly twenty years, Mr. and Mrs. Powell moved to Houston where Mr. Powell was for 25 years an executive with Brown & Root, an international construction company. He served that company as General Counsel, Director and Executive Vice President until his retirement in 1980. Furthermore, Mr. Powell had longtime active business interests in Austin as well as in the Huntsville area. Ben Powell passed away in 1989. Kitty King Powell served as the Foundation’s founding director until her death in the fall of 2015.
